Dylan Arnot

Coaching and Clinical Psychologist

BA, PostGradDipPsych, MScCoachPsych, MPsych (Clinical)

Hi, I’m Dylan Arnot, a Clinical and Performance Psychologist based in Melbourne.

I help athletes, professionals, leaders and creatives manage pressure, strengthen their mental skills and perform more consistently in the areas that matter to them.

Some clients come to me because anxiety, self-doubt or overthinking are interfering with their performance. Others are already performing at a high level but want to become more focused, resilient and psychologically flexible.

Psychological flexibility involves learning how to manage pressure, respond constructively to setbacks and pursue demanding goals without losing your health, relationships or connection with what matters to you.

My approach combines performance psychology, clinical psychology and coaching psychology. This allows us to work on both performance outcomes and the broader psychological factors that may be affecting them.

How a performance psychologist can help

Performance psychology focuses on the mental and emotional factors that influence how you prepare, perform and recover.

You may benefit from working with a performance psychologist if you are experiencing:

  • Performance anxiety or nerves

  • Overthinking under pressure

  • Difficulty maintaining confidence

  • Fear of failure or making mistakes

  • Perfectionism and harsh self-criticism

  • Inconsistent motivation or preparation

  • Difficulty concentrating during important moments

  • Frustration after poor performances

  • Loss of enjoyment or meaning

  • Burnout and emotional exhaustion

  • Difficulty returning after injury or a setback

  • Challenges balancing performance with the rest of your life

Our work is tailored to your individual goals, environment and stage of development.

Our aim is to help you respond more effectively and flexibly when pressure, uncertainty and difficult emotions arise.

Sport psychology in Melbourne

I provide sport psychology support for professional, elite, developing and recreational athletes.

My experience includes working with athletes from:

  • AFL

  • A-League football

  • Olympic and Paralympic sport

  • Professional tennis

  • Surfing

  • Basketball

  • Endurance sports

  • Individual and team sports

Athletes often seek support because they perform well in training but struggle to reproduce that performance in competition. Others may feel consumed by results, lose confidence after mistakes or find it difficult to stay mentally present.

Sport psychology sessions may focus on:

  • Performing under pressure

  • Pre-performance routines

  • Confidence and self-belief

  • Attention and concentration

  • Managing competition anxiety

  • Responding to mistakes

  • Motivation and training consistency

  • Goal setting and preparation

  • Communication with coaches and teammates

  • Injury rehabilitation

  • Selection uncertainty

  • Career transitions

  • Identity outside sport

  • Sustainable performance and burnout prevention

You do not need to be a professional athlete to benefit from sport psychology.

I work with athletes across different levels who care deeply about their sport and want to approach it with greater clarity, confidence and consistency.

Performing under pressure

Pressure can change the way we think, feel and behave.

You may become overly focused on the outcome, analyse your technique, rush decisions or become preoccupied with what other people are thinking.

For some people, pressure leads to avoidance or hesitation. For others, it produces excessive effort, tension and an attempt to control every detail of the performance.

We work on developing a more flexible response to pressure.

This may involve learning how to:

  • Direct your attention towards useful cues

  • Make room for nerves without becoming controlled by them

  • Recover quickly after mistakes

  • Trust your preparation

  • Stay connected with the task in front of you

  • Compete according to your values

  • Perform with commitment rather than fear

Confidence, motivation and consistency

Confidence is not always something you need to find before you act.

It can be developed through preparation, experience and learning to respond differently to uncertainty.

Together, we may examine the habits, beliefs and emotional patterns affecting your performance. We can then develop practical strategies for preparation, concentration, motivation and recovery.

This may be particularly helpful if you:

  • Train well but underperform in competition

  • Lose confidence quickly after mistakes

  • Rely heavily on results for self-worth

  • Struggle to maintain motivation across a long season

  • Avoid important opportunities because of fear

  • Become stuck in cycles of overtraining and exhaustion

  • Know what you should do but struggle to follow through consistently

Performance psychology for leaders and professionals

Performance pressure is not limited to sport.

I also work with executives, business owners, health professionals and people in demanding leadership roles.

You may be responsible for complex decisions, high expectations and the wellbeing or performance of other people. Although you may appear capable and composed externally, the internal experience can involve considerable stress, self-doubt or isolation.

Performance psychology can support you with:

  • Decision-making under pressure

  • Confidence in leadership

  • Managing stress and responsibility

  • Difficult conversations

  • Sustainable motivation

  • Navigating uncertainty

  • Perfectionism and fear of failure

  • Work-life boundaries

  • Burnout prevention

  • Maintaining connection with personal values

The work is not simply about becoming more productive.

It is about performing effectively while building a life that remains psychologically healthy, sustainable and meaningful.

Psychology for creatives and performers

I work with musicians, writers, artists and creatives from a range of fields.

Creative work often involves uncertainty, vulnerability and periods of intense self-evaluation. You may be managing deadlines, public judgment, creative blocks or the difficulty of turning ideas into completed work.

Sessions may focus on:

  • Creative confidence

  • Performance anxiety

  • Procrastination and avoidance

  • Perfectionism

  • Maintaining momentum

  • Responding to criticism

  • Developing sustainable creative routines

  • Managing the uncertainty of a creative career

  • Reconnecting with meaning and purpose

My own understanding of creative work informs an approach that respects both the practical and deeply personal nature of the creative process.

Clinical psychology and high performance

Performance difficulties do not always exist in isolation.

Anxiety, panic attacks, low mood, burnout, trauma, relationship stress or major life transitions can all affect concentration, motivation and performance.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I can help address these underlying psychological challenges alongside your performance goals.

I also work with clients with ADHD and autistic clients whose neurodivergence may influence attention, motivation, preparation, emotional regulation or performance consistency.

For some high-performing people, ADHD can contribute to intense focus in areas of interest alongside difficulties with organisation, routine, task initiation or recovery. Support can include both performance-focused strategies and practical ADHD coaching.

My approach

My style is warm, practical, collaborative and evidence-based.

I draw primarily on:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Coaching psychology

  • Performance psychology

  • Behavioural and motivational strategies

  • Values-based approaches

Sessions are tailored to you rather than based on a standard performance formula.

We may work on practical mental skills, but we will also consider the wider context: your personality, values, relationships, environment and the meaning you attach to performance.

I aim to create a space where you can speak honestly about pressure, ambition, fear, disappointment and uncertainty without being judged.

A sustainable approach to high performance

Ambition and wellbeing do not have to be opposing goals.

For many people, the most effective path to high performance involves becoming more flexible rather than more controlling, more purposeful rather than more relentless, and more able to recover rather than simply pushing through.

Our work may help you:

  • Understand your individual performance patterns

  • Prepare more effectively

  • Respond more constructively to pressure

  • Build confidence through action

  • Manage setbacks without losing direction

  • Perform in a way that reflects your values

  • Pursue excellence more sustainably
